This post is based on something mentioned in the last blog, about practicing pilates with curiosity around our physical abilities. So from that, I wonder how much of our “i can’t do this” moments are actually not around the fact we “can’t” and possibly have more to do with the lack of confidence to try?
Confidence is a funny one, it literally means “to trust in myself”.
Confidence is also super personal, and it’s not that consistent either is it. Let’s be honest, some days we are more up for trying things than others. And that would be, (again) because we are more complex than just being a sack of bones and muscles. Having confidence to try something takes effort too. Can be confronting some days.
So let’s try and reframe this.
What if we stay curious about our bodies and what it can do?
Perhaps replacing the “i can’t” with
Let me see where i can get to in this one
Or
WHAT CAN I do today?
And let your body tell you, not your mind, (before you’ve even begun).
Saying “i can’t” is really quite limiting. It invites restriction.
Yes, the truth is, you may not get much further, but a more optimistic mindset around it is definitely going to bring more softness to your movement and that may then allow more movement to become available to you.
The interesting thing about teaching is that often, as teachers WE know what you can actually achieve, if you tried, and that’s because we trust the techniques.
With that in mind, when your self belief is a struggle, try trusting the practice. The techniques, the cues. The SYSTEM! It’s absolute magic and it WORKS!
