When we practice pilates, so much of it is about directing our internal power and energy. You see, the body just naturally pulls us in a direction, usually finding the least amount of resistance, then come those Pilates cues that get you to do the opposite so you start to work way deeper.
Once we get to grips with that concept, we realize that we DO have a lot of strength, it’s all about HOW we direct it! Your body can absolutely go there, it just doesn’t feel easy that’s all. And we aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work are we ……. ??
Once we practice in the studio, this concept of using internal efforts to maneuver ourselves starts to apply itself to our day to day activities and movements. Small things, like taking out the bins, picking up our kids, changing the bedding etc… This is really where the practice (and benefits of it) show up.
Let’s be real about something, thats what we all want!! Yes, getting better at doing certain moves is awesome, but getting through the day to day with more ease is even more awesome!
This can also serve to keep us focused on the benefits of the practice rather than the performative element of it. This means that even if you’re not where you THINK you should be in the exercise, as long as you’re fully connected and working to your full expression then that’s as beneficial for your body than in is for the person next to you who appears more flexible or ‘strong’.
After all, ‘STRONG’ doesn't have a look, but it sure does have a feel! Going deeper and directing the internal power is one of the core elements that teach you strength and how to access what you already possess.
We’ll see you lifting and lengthening soon!
